GENERATIONS OF COMPUTER

1.First generation computer.

The period of first generation computer was from 1940 to 1956.
In this generation vaccum tubes were used for calculation as well as storage and control.

The first generation computer were very large in size, most expensive , take large space for installation , unreliable and emit large amount of heat.

The language were use in this generation was machine language.

 Example of 1st generation computer are

  • ENIAC
  • EDVAC
  • UNIVAC

2.Second generation computer.

The period of second generation was from 1956 to 1963.
In this generation transistors were used in the place of vaccum tubes. Transistors were made of semiconducting material and controlled the flow of electricity through circuit.

 Computer of second generation is less expensive than first generation computer.
Small in size in compare of 1st generation computer, less reliable, required less electricity and emit less amount of heat .

The language were used in  second generation computer was Assembly language.

 Example of second generation computer

  •  PDP-8
  •  IBM1400 series
  • IBM 1620
  •  IBM 7090
  • CDC 3600

3.Third generation computer.

The period of third generation was from 1964 to 1971.
In third generation integrated circuit (ICs) were used in the place of transistor.These ICs are popularly known as chip.

 A chip is less than 1/4 square inches and can contain million of electronic components (transistors).

 Computer of  this generation were small in size, more relialable, less costly than second generation computer. 
The language were used in third generation computer was High level language.

  •  NCR 395
  •  B6500
  • IBM 360,370 

4.Fourth generation computer.

The period of fourth generation was from 1971 to present.
In this generation microprocessor were used. It contains all the circuits required to perform arithmetic ,logic and control function on single chip.

Fourth generation computer is smaller in size,more reliable,faster in speed and less expensive than the previous generation.

The language were used in fourth generation computer was High level language.

 Example of fourth generation computer

  •  Apple II
  •  Alter 8800 

5.Fifth generation computer.

The period of fifth generation is present and beyond .
Technology used in this generation is artificial intelligence.
The computer of this generation is still i development.

The language use in this generation computer is high level language.

Computer can perform million of calculation in a second. HOW COMPUTER WORKS ?
